41 ST PRECINCT REUNION INFORMATION FROM BILL RATH:

The 41 police precinct station house at 1086 Simpson St., Bronx was originally designated the 62nd precinct when it was built in 1914. Later on it was changed to the 47th, precinct the 20th precinct and finally in 1929 the 41st.precinct covering 2.5 square miles. Census states there were over 140,000 people residing there mostly in tenements. Designated a NYC Landmark Building in 1992.

In the mid 60s the 41 precinct was given the name 'Fort Apache.' There are some versions on how this came to be. One is during a busy 4 x12 tour Lt. Lloyd Gittens the desk officer received a call from the media inquiring about the three homicides that occurred that tour. Amid the chaos in front of him, Lt. Gittens said:  “Don't you know this is Ft. Apache and we are under siege?” The late 60s to early 70s 440 officers and supervisors were assigned there, as well as a  cadre of TPF and SES officers. Aside from special units there were 18 sectors. A busy precinct would not even begin to describe it. It was made famous by the officers who worked there, the media, Hollywood and 4 books and largely do to the amount of violence there and the decay of urban areas. Paul Newman starred in the Movie 'Fort Apache' and there are two books with the name. It led the city in homicides for years breaking 122 in one year.
The building is still there housing Bronx Detectives special units. The new 41 is located on Longwood Ave.  The building will live on as a landmark and a tribute to all that worked there.
