POLICE WEEK IN NEW YORK CITY
This year, National Police Week commences on Mother's Day May 14 and ends on Saturday, May 20.
Here in New York City, the SURVIVORS OF THE
SHIELD, an organization of the widows and orphans of members of the NYPD who have given the "last full measure of devotion" will conduct a memorial service on Monday, May
15, 2000. The site of the service will be at the NYPD Police Memorial located in Battery Park City in Manhattan. The memorial service will take place at 1100 hours during which time a
reading of the 465 names inscribed on the monument will take place. Wreaths will be placed on the monument. An honor guard will be in place at the memorial from 0700 hours until sunset.
The SURVIVORS OF THE SHIELD ask that those attending the ceremonies wear a royal blue ribbon to show their support for the police. They also ask those who visit the memorial
during Police Week to place a flower on the monument to show their support for all members of the NYPD.
The NYPD Memorial is located in Battery Park City at the foot of Liberty Street and the Hudson River. It is a quiet and
peaceful setting. The name of Detective Luis Lopez touched me personally. I knew him when we worked together in the 120th Precinct. Another such name will be added to the wall-
Police Officer Matthew Dziergowski.
I know that real New Yorkers take pride in their cops- NEW YORK'S FINEST. Place a flower on the memorial to commemorate those who have sacrificed their lives for us.
EDITOR’S NOTE:
The SURVIVORS OF THE SHIELD ask that you attach a royal blue ribbon to your car antennas or wear a royal blue ribbon if attending the police memorial service.
