Remembering PFC Thomas P. Jensen, Prince George’s County Maryland Police Department: In Memoriam
There are heavy hearts in the Prince George’s County Maryland Police Department and throughout law enforcement and criminal justice circles with the recent in-line of duty death of PFC Officer Thomas P. Jensen, 27, who worked out of the District One substation in Hyattsville, Maryland. Officer Jensen
served for 5 ½ years prior to his death on March 9, 2010. He followed the career path of his father, Tom Jensen, a retired Sergeant in the department. Officer Jensen was responding to a burglary when his cruiser slid on a patch of black ice causing his vehicle to hit a pole. He sustained
serious injuries that left him hospitalized and, ultimately, in a medically induced coma until his death.
Recently married only five months ago, he leaves behind his wife, Kristelle, and his parents. The members of Squad 22 especially feel his loss among the 1600 members of the entire police department.
The bond the squad members share with one another will aid them in continuing to move forward in their professional pursuits despite the deep loss of their beloved colleague and friend.
The squad members demonstrated their commitment to serve as a continuous support system to his wife by a notable and public display of standing in unison at the funeral ceremony in which they vowed
to be there for her. “I promised we would never, ever leave you. Squad 22, stand up,” Sgt. Manuel Rivera said.
The halls of the Prince George’s County Maryland courthouse were barren of officers on March 15, 2009—the day of his funeral ceremony—in which officers far and wide came to pay their respects to
their comrade in public safety. Recognized for both his larger than life frame of 6’6” and his tremendous sense of humor that made others laugh, he was also passionately committed to his serious
role as a police officer who proudly followed in his father’s footsteps.
With so much to live for and too young to die, Officer Jensen’s
death is both sad and tragic. However, in his measured days on earth, he positively touched many lives with enduring impact. Fond
recollections of his life and dedication to a profession he cherished will serve as comfort to assuage the grief and provide inspiration to move forward.
